Tuning In

This week has been a week of tuning in for me - tuning in to the Spirit's call to prayer.  I've been called to pray about national tragedy, epic weather conditions, life-threatening illnesses, and hearts breaking over personal loss.  I've been called to pray for presidents and missionaries and pastors and friends and family and co-workers.  And I have prayed.  And prayed.

And the crazy thing is that as I have prayed I have heard lines from secular songs and lines from Shakespeare and lines from C.S. Lewis and lines from Emily Dickinson.  But I have kept praying.   It seems Spirit is using lines in my head to direct my prayers in odd ways but effective ways for sure.

"Take to the highway, won't you lend me your name..." lead to prayers for safe travel for many who were on the road and in the air during the recent storms.  "Something wicked this way comes..." lead to prayers for those needing covering and comfort in the face of illness and heart break and as victims of the recent national tragedy.  You get the picture...

But the following passage from God's Word kept me praying most of all.  It tuned my heart to the truth of His listening ear, His caring heart, His faithful response, His strong hand, His sure promise, and His unfailing love.  Pray with me, friends.  Spirit is calling.  Tune in.

Psalm 119:169-176 (The Message)

Let my cry come right into your presence, God;
      provide me with the insight that comes only from your Word.
   Give my request your personal attention,
      rescue me on the terms of your promise.
   Let praise cascade off my lips;
      after all, you've taught me the truth about life!
   And let your promises ring from my tongue;
      every order you've given is right.
   Put your hand out and steady me
      since I've chosen to live by your counsel.
   I'm homesick, God, for your salvation;
      I love it when you show yourself!
   Invigorate my soul so I can praise you well,
      use your decrees to put iron in my soul.
   And should I wander off like a lost sheep—seek me!
      I'll recognize the sound of your voice.
