These Hands

Today I woke to the song "Open the Eyes of My Heart" and thought of this passage from Ephesians 1:18-21  "I pray also that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which he has called you, the riches of his glorious inheritance in the saints, and his incomparably great power for us who believe. That power is like the working of his mighty strength, which he exerted in Christ when he raised him from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly realms, far above all rule and authority, power and dominion, and every title that can be given, not only in the present age but also in the one to come."

Psalm 77 has been in my heart and mind for many months.  And Father has been reminding me of it all week.  So I read it this morning.  The psalmist is in a difficult place - I don't know why - but he is crying out for God's help, comfort and mercy.  He feels as if God has turned His back and left him alone in the night with his thoughts and fears.  He wonders if God has forgotten him and if God will ever respond to his prayers and if His love will return and if His promises will ever be fulfilled.  And he decides to remember God and who He is.  He remembers the power of God's right hand.  Psalm 77:10  Then I thought, "To this I will appeal: the years of the right hand of the Most High."

Just from the Psalms I know that God's right hand:

  • Sustains me - Psalm 18:35
  • Is full of saving power - Psalm 20:6
  • Gives victory - Psalm 44:3
  • Displays awesome deeds - Psalm 45:4
  • Is filled with righteousness - Psalm 48:10
  • Saves me - Psalm 60:5
  • Lifts me up - Psalm 63:8
  • Holds me close - Psalm 73:23
  • Works salvation - Psalm 98:1
  • Helps me - Psalm 108:6
  • Does mighty things - Psalm 118:15
  • Guides me and holds me tight - Psalm 139:10

The Psalmist in 77 was appealing to the power of God's right hand displayed at the parting of the Red Sea - when He delivered His people from the hands of the Egyptians - when He set them free - when He did a great miracle for all the world to see - when He displayed His love, His mercy, His promise.  It was a picture of power and might and majesty and salvation and victory.  Yet no one saw God do it.  And Ephesians 1 is a picture of the same thing in the resurrection and ascension of Christ that brings us salvation and victory.

The Psalmist says this in verse 19:  Your path led through the sea, your way through the mighty waters, though your footprints were not seen.   How many times has God sustained me, saved me, given me victory, done awesome things, lifted me up, held me close, helped me, and guided me?  Did I see His footprints?  Did I feel His right hand upon me?  No - not actually - but I knew He was there and I knew it was Him.  Like the psalmist, in my moments of crying out and feeling alone, I can remember His right hand and find the answers and the comfort and the strength and the love and the mercy even though I can't see the footprints or feel His hand.  And I know that the resurrection and ascension of Christ is what displays His power and love and mercy in me.  That is beautiful and wonderful for certain.  But this morning as I was reading Psalm 77 a different thought came to my heart from Spirit.  It came from verse 20.

Psalm 77:20 You led your people like a flock by the hand of Moses and Aaron.  When I read this I looked down at my own hands and wondered what Father might do with His mighty right hand through my own small and somewhat weak hands.  I quit pondering my crying out for His help as I pondered that His help - His mighty right hand is in my own hands.  The Message says that He was 'hidden in the hands of Moses and Aaron.'  Is He hidden in my hands?  Could these hands part a sea so millions could walk through on dry ground?  Probably not today.  Then I recalled the truth of Ephesians 1 - that the very same power hidden in the hands of Moses and Aaron is the same power that raised Christ from the dead and seated Him in the heavens - at Father's right hand.  And that same power is in me...

I prayed this morning that Father's mighty right hand, which is hidden in my own hands - would do what He does - to sustain, to do awesome deeds, to save, to lift, to hold, to help, to guide - so that others will see Him and His glory and draw near to Him in faith.  I prayed that His power would flow in and through me as I surrender these hands to the Christ who lives in me.  I don't need to cry out for His hand to work for me because it is actually in me and will work through me.  I will simply rest in Him and be amazed at the works His right hand.

Because I am in Christ, and therefore, Christ is is me, these hands are the glove for Father's mighty right hand.  They don't seem so small and weak now.

Signing off for now - with these hands...
Amy
