In Him
(a/k/a How Many Different Sources Can I Quote or Reference in One Blog)
"I am utterly alone." Winona Ryder's character says that in the movie Beetlejuice. She is despondent because no one understands or appreciates her and she has no friends. Earlier in the movie, when moving into the family's new home, she describes herself like this: "I, myself, am strange and unusual." Perhaps that explains why she is utterly alone...
Remember the sitcom Cheers? It is the one where the same strange and unusual group of people went to the same bar every day. It was the place they went to keep from being utterly alone. It was where they could feel accepted, appreciated, and welcomed. It was the place where they could see that people are all the same. It was where everybody was glad they came. And everybody knew their name.
The other day I was reminded of Psalm 25:16. It says, "Turn to me and be gracious to me for I am lonely and afflicted." As I thought about this verse I was reminded of Winona in Beetlejuice and of the gang at Cheers. The psalmist was feeling alone, strange and unusual, and was looking for the place where everybody knew his name. Verse 15 tells us where he was looking: "My eyes are ever on the Lord for only He will release my feet from the snare."
I can identify with Winona. And with the gang at Cheers. And with the psalmist. I feel utterly alone at times. And I, myself, am definitely strange and unusual. And I find that making my way in this world today takes everything I've got. I long to go to the place where I can see that people are all the same and troubles are all the same. So I keep my eyes ever on the Lord. He gives me direction when, like eLi, I call out and say: "Sweet Jesus, show Your child the way - there's got to be a better day." Sometimes I want to go where everybody is glad I came - where everybody knows my name. He is always glad to be with me. He sees me, loves me, and He knows my name. Tommy Walker puts it like this: "He knows my name. He knows my every thought. He sees each tear that falls and He hears me when I call."
In Him, I can be utterly alone and not lonely. In Him I can be strange and unusual but beautiful and precious in His sight. In Him I am always welcome, accepted, and known. In Him I can be released and freed. He is always glad I came. And my Sweet Jesus always shows this child the way. He never forgets my name.
Do you know Him to be like that in your life? I pray He will open your eyes to see that He is all that and more.
Blessings on you,
