All My Fountains
Last Sunday during a corporate worship time I was singing You Are My King/Amazing Love by Billy Foote (©1997 worshiptogether.com songs) and when we got to the end I had a momentary debate with myself about whether or not I could sing the last line. The line says "in all I do, I honor You." Confusion always hits at this point because I know that I don't honor my King in all I do. And He knows it. So how can I sing it? And I recalled an email conversation I had a couple of weeks earlier with my friend, Bill, that straightened it all out for me.
Bill and I were discussing another song, written by one of our friends that is going to be part of a cd currently in production. The song is All My Fountains by Kevin Walker. It says "All my fountains are in You, You satisfy every longing of my heart. My thirst for more is through." These are also lines that make me stop and ask myself if I can really sing them and mean it. Am I satisfied in Him or do I still have discontent and longing? Is He really the source of what flows from me? Are all my fountains really in Him? I told Bill that every time I pass a fountain I think of All My Fountains and of Psalm 87 which ends with the words "as they make music they will sing 'all my fountains are in You.'".
And I told him the sound of fountains also makes me think of Joel 3:18 - "In that day the mountains will drip new wine and the hills will flow with milk; all the ravines of Judah will run with water. A fountain will flow out of the Lord's house and will water the Valley of Acacias." The Valley of Acacias (also called the Valley Of Shittim) was a place of great failure for God's people - in Numbers 25 we see that the men of Israel began to worship Baal in this valley. It was also a launching place for Israel before they marched on Jericho in Joshua 3 and so it was a place of the beginning of fulfillment of God's promise. And in Joel 3 we see it as a place of great victory on the day when the fountain of God's grace will flow over it to cover every sin and through it to bring fulfillment of every blessing promised by Him. The Valley of Acacias is where His fountain flows through all of our failures, all of our new beginnings, and all of our victories to bring the promise of God to our lives. And since we have received the promise of Christ and since Ephesians 1:3 tells us we have been given every spiritual blessing in Christ, then He flows in every part of our lives. So... All our fountains are in Him, aren't they?
And as I was pondering that all my fountains are in Him whether I feel satsfied or content or not, I was reminded of the rest of Psalm 87. The psalm talks about how God loves Zion - called the City of God - and how the people were honored and proud to be able to say they were born in Zion. And how God would establish Himself in Zion - in the people of Zion - and how He would be honored and proud to say "This one was born in Zion!" And then all the people would make music and sing "All my fountains are in you." The people in Psalm 87 were singing about God and His holy city and they found their fountains - their source - their satisfaction - their blessing - their joy - their identity - in being born of Him and in His city. Consequently, you are no longer foreigners and aliens, but fellow citizens with God's people and members of God's household, built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, with Christ Jesus himself as the chief cornerstone. In him the whole building is joined together and rises to become a holy temple in the Lord. And in him you too are being built together to become a dwelling in which God lives by his Spirit. Ephesians 2:19-22 So we, who are in Christ, are also born in Zion, God's holy city and, in fact, we are the house of God. Joel said the fountain will flow out of the Lord's house. So we honor Him as our King because of His amazing love which makes us righteous so that when God looks at us He sees Christ covering our every sin and filling us with every spiritual blessing. And we can make music and sing "All my fountains are in You." And its true. Because of Him. In us. The fountain flowing from the house of God is Christ in us. Amazing. Makes me want to sing about it.
Just like I said to Bill - and to myself on Sunday - when I am singing these songs that speak words that I don't feel like I can sing honestly based on myself - my actions and my flesh - I can rest in the fact that because of Christ, I can sing the words with all my heart. He is the fountain. He is the source of who I am. And He flows through me and over me and splashes all around me!
Singing,
Amy
