EnJOY the Day
Yesterday I read a very short little devotional from a book called Prayers of a Loyal Friend by Dr. Criswell Freeman. It was entitled "Help Me, Lord, To Be A Worthy Friend" and the point of the message was to be a friend who encourages, loves, blesses, and helps others that Father has placed in their lives. Each devotional in the book contains one paragraph of message, a few quotes from various sources, and a prayer. One of the quotes was from C.H. Spurgeon: "Friendship is one of the sweetest joys of life. Many might have failed beneath the bitterness of their trial had they not found a friend." And part of the prayer said this: "Lord, You seek abundance and joy for me and for all Your children. One way that I can share Your joy is through the gift of friendship."
I have had breakfast and lunches with friends this week. I met a new friend this week. I learned that some of my oldest friends like peanut butter and blueberries, just like me. I have communicated with many friends by email. And I communicated with several friends by phone. I have exchanged hugs and gifts and pondered deep spiritual things and laughed about silly things with friends this week. And I prayed for many friends throughout the week. And I shared the evening with some friends. And two friends called me yesterday just to say they loved me. And I asked friends to pray for other friends. And all of it brought joy to my heart.
It is true that one way I can share in God's joy is through the gift of friendship. You can, too. And if you feel alone and like you don't have any friends, one of the best ways to find one is to bring joy and encouragement and love and blessings to someone else. Perhaps someone Father puts in your life today is in a bitter trial and your reaching out to them will be what prevents their failing in that tough place. The gift of friendship is not always to be received - but is also to be given.
EnJOY your day by being a worthy friend.
Philippians 4:1 My dear, dear friends! I love you so much. I do want the very best for you. You make me feel such joy, fill me with such pride. Don't waver. Stay on track, steady in God. (the Message)
Joy and love to you, my friends.
